History of PoniArcade MC

From time to time we have players ask about the history of PArcMC, how long we've been around, things like that.
Below is a full, detailed account of the server's history.
If you find any errors or would like to give your input, please contact a staff member!
We would love for players, especially older players, to help expand the article!

On July 25th, 2011, a server was created by Sgt.Lobster going by the name of Craftsmanship is Magic and joined Ponyville.net as their official Minecraft-server.
This continued for a long while, steadily improving.
We talked to Sgt.Lobster and got his story on the server's early days as Craftsmanship is Magic...

Basically I wanted to play minecraft with a couple of friends.
Though after joining other communities we didn't want to deal with other peoples' rules and adminship.
So, I had decided to buy a server.
We had fun for a while but I wanted a bigger use of this server.

I opened it up and took the password off and then started calling it Craftsmanship is Magic.
Did a rough attempt at advertising to get players and really all we got were griefers.
And at the time I was also playing TF2 and of course I was playing on Ponyville.
So I hatched an idea and pitched said idea to Raini.
It was to offer my server for the ponyville community so that it doesn't just cover TF2.
Raini agreed and when I had made the proper preporations for a re-opening Raini announced and also streamed the new ponyville minecraft server.

-Sgt.Lobster
It was standard survival, with quite a few player-made building, and very few plugins.
It was during this time a player named Cyrate, going by "SweetieBelle" joined the server.
The server continued in this manner for a long while with significant support from Ponyville.net.
On March 14th 2012, Sgt.Lobster made the announcement that they were done with Minecraft and would give the server to another admin.
SweetieBelle immediately offered to run the server, and was given ownership of the server.
Thus began the reign of SweetieBelle.

SweetieBelle, was a server-owner who, to this day, is renouned among the staff members and older players for ruling with an iron hoof and executing and/or banning players mercilessly.
During the reign of Sweetie, things were run almost completely opposite of Sgt.Lobster's ownership.
While Sgt.Lobster ran the server with consistency and stability, Sweetie took great pleasure in experimenting with the server.
This made it tough for the server to function well, and placed an enourmous load upon the staff, but provided valuable experience with technical hurdles that would help to set the foundation for PonyMC's future.

Eventually, Sweetie drifted away to Team Fortress 2, and the server began to stagnate.
A technical admin at the time, Orca didn't like the stagnation and began making changes without her consent.
When Sweetie returned and discovered that Orca was beginning to take control of the server, she was furious and began demoting many of the admins who had followed Orca.
After several days of intense discussion among Sweetie and the admins, Orca convinced her to give him control of Craftsmanship is Magic, and she left to run a new Tekkit server.
The Tekkit server closed it's doors a few weeks later.

In early March of 2012, near the end of Sgt.Lobster's ownership of the server, a player named ioncann0ns going by "Orca". joined the server
They liked the server, but suggested adding a plugin that gave players pony-like abilities.
It was largely ignored due to the player being very new, and because there were no publicly available plugins for pony abilities.

When Sweetie took ownership of the server a few weeks later, she gave Orca the opportunity he needed.
She was interested in his suggestion of the classes plugin and offered to give Orca an administrator role if he coded the plugin.
Roughly a week or so later the plugin was finalized and deployed with the first three classes, "Earth", "Unicorn", and "Pegasus".
Orca was given admin and became the server's sole technical admin.
It was around this time the support from Ponyville.net began to wane.

After several days of intense discussion among Sweetie and the admins, Orca convinced her to give him control of Craftsmanship is Magic.

On October 8th 2012, Orca was given control of Craftsmanship is Magic.
Most of the server staff stayed with Orca.
Being thrown into the ownership position suddenly, and wanting the server to have the opportunity to grow, Orca sought help from Ponyville.net.
He offered to solicit for donations to Ponyville.net through the server, if Ponyville.net would help with the costs of getting the server off the ground.
He was denied assistance.
Orca decided to temporarily host the server from home during this time and to give ownership of the server to the OPs to run collaboratively.

For several months PonyMC begged for donations from players, most of the donations coming from staff members. (Thank you Scoot.)
By January 30th 2013 the server had gotten enough donations to attempt to move away from Ponyville.net using a very small VPS from DotBlock and the OPs agreed to rename the server due to the old name being excessively long, and having grown to bear some negative repute.
PonyMC was born.

Under the new flag of "PonyMC" the OPs drove forward, improving and growing the server, inviting back old players who left due to earlier stagnation and grew the player base with new players.
The player base grew at a slow rate of roughly 8-10 new players joining per day, with a couple sticking around for longer than a few days.
This growth was both a blessing and a curse however, as the server began attracting malicious users.

February 14th 2013 the fledgling PonyMC fell under it's first DDoS.
While the attack was relatively small, DotBlock was unpleased and refused to host them, deleting all of their data and refusing further service.
Orca had backups, but the current backups being performed at the time were only every 24 hours, so the data destruction set players back a noticeable amount.
With the threat of DDoS looming, Orca could not move the server back to home-hosting.

In Feburary of 2013, PonyMC was struggling, low on funds, no hosting, and under attack.
They moved the server to ProvisionHost because of ProvisionHost's offer of reasonably-priced DDoS protection, but the server wouldn't last more than a month without more donations.

A dedicated player named scoot1313 didn't want the server to die out and single-handedly funded the server for several months.
They donated in excess of $800 over the course of several months to help PonyMC fund server hosting costs as well as excessive DDoS-protection costs.

Through these months, the server continued to grow steadily, improving and expanding with players-online hitting low 30s on good weekends, and no longer desparate for funds.
Roughly April of 2013 PonyMC had outgrown ProvisionHost's VPS services and needed a powerful dedicated server to accommodate PonyMC's rapidly-growing player base.

Just before they were about to migrate to a new server, PonyMC staff noticed another server was having hosting problems.
This server went by the name of Bronycraft and was a branch-off from the old Ponycraft.
It took several months of discussion but eventually Bronycraft and PonyMC agreed on a merging of the two servers.
The brought with them their massive Equestria project and several dedicated staff members.

When the 1.7 update hit, PonyMC began receiving some attention from the larger brony community and many new players anxiously awaited PonyMC's update to 1.7.

On January 1st 2014, PonyMC updated to 1.7 and the player base of PonyMC exploded.
PonyMC went from 30-35 players during weekends to 60-70 players-online.
189 new players joined that day.

On the 18th July 2015, the PonyMC OPs announced that PonyMC would be handed off to Poniverse and PoniArcade.

Orca and the rest of the OPs resigned the same day, leaving comments for the playerbase granting well wishes.
Under the new leadership of PoniArcade, the server carried on much the same way as before - destined to remain the same friendly and inviting server it had always been.
